January 22nd, 2010 - Minimal Synth

Not unlike the proverbial box of chocolate, when you come across an unbeknownst Atlantic record, with it's iconic green and red label, you never really know what you're gonna get. With a little past history and an educated guess you could rule out the chances of said record containing two beautiful cuts of robo-motional minimal-synth. But then you'd likely miss out on such gems as Krisma's Miami EP.

Krisma understated roll in the history of electronic music dates back to 1976, when Maurizio Arcieri and his wife Christina Moser collaborated with producer Nico Papathanassiou and his better known brother Vangelis to release the singles "U" and "Amore" under the name Chrisma. In '78 they released the full-length "Chinese Restaurant", which featured the top-10 single "Lola". During the album's promotional tour, Maurizio gained notoriety for the "finger job" -- an aptly named stage trick in which he appeared to cut off his finger with a razor.

On top of the musical success, Krisma also directed three videos for MTV and developed KRISMINO, the first minisequencer. So yeah, they pretty much did everything. Awesome.

nice post! i found this 12″ at a thrift shop in brooklyn, took a chance, and it totally worked out. such a semi-hidden gem to be released on a major label, back when those guys were stretching a little.

Very nice! They were indeed ahead of their time. I’m super curious about the KRISMINO sequencer, but there’s not much detail floating around it…no pics or anything. Now I’d be especially excited if I happened upon one of those at a thrift store :)

P.S. We at Soap are huge fans of your blog :)
