Valentine’s Day

One of the most cliche, emo things you can do is complain about how much Valentine’s Day sucks. But the fact of the matter is, it does. But take comfort in the fact that SOAP doesn’t need some arbitrary, faux-Halmark-cum-Christian “holy”day to celebrate the mutual love it shares with it’s readers and listeners. We’ll make your heart beat like an 808 every day of the year.

New Year in China

What better way to start off the new year than with some New Beat. One thing I’ve noticed about early 90’s Belgian New Beat is the lack of originality in the song titles. I mean, look at that track list! Fatal Error? Public Relations? You’re not even trying! And the rest of you guys aren’t much better. IMO, a self-titled track should be something that you work up to, not something that you start off with. Otherwise, it seems like some kind of marketing scheme.

Anyway, enough with that. Welcome to 2008, old skool style. Listen up and enjoy.

Walmart USA

New York is a tough place this time of year. If you don’t ride the holiday tidal wave you will undoubtedly get caught in its undertow. Unfortunately, we’re not very good surfers. Luckily music has improved our ability to hermit-ize. While half the country is out elbowing each other for a chance at the latest $2 DVD player deal at Walmart, SOAP is hunkered down in Studio 4G spinning records, sliding faders and tweaking knobs…The ultimate cure for your holiday blues.

Darkness warshed over SOAP. Darker than a black steer’s tookus on a moonless prairie night…I know daylight savings ended like two weeks ago now, but we’re still feeling the effects. WSOP radio, episode 010: Eskimos and Such

Eskimos

Gotta love pretty much everything Eskimo is putting out these days. I received a couple of their latest releases in the mail last week. By now you should be aware of Aeroplane, specifically their self-titled single which made an appearance on the Lindstrom & Prins Thomas Essential Mix some months back. The real surprise for me was the B-side of their debut EP, Caramellas. Keep your ears, uh, pealed(?), for this heavenly piece of deep house Balearica.

WSOP radio, episode 009: Moods & States of Mind

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

Clearaudio turntable

It’s no secret that the mood of a “DJ” is often conveyed by the music he’s is playing. But when it’s the DJ’s state of mind that shines through, things can get messy. Last Friday night was a prime example of this. As Ellsworth stumbled through the door of studio 4G demanding music and booze, I jumped at the opportunity to flip the “record” switch. The resulting mix is all over the place, starting with brooding minimalish techno, and ending with 45 minutes of ambient electronics. Enjoy.
